Throne
Room
The Throne Room provides
the grand finale for the current tour of Kartchner Caverns State Park. Prepare
for visual overload. Everywhere one looks, speleothems come into view. Soda
straws, bacon, stalactites, helictites and flowstone are among the formations
spotted throughout the immense room. Far and away the most spectacular feature
is Kubla Khan, a 58-foot-tall column that reaches to the ceiling. Stand awhile
and simply appreciate this wonder. It won't be wasted time. On a much smaller
scale are baby formations. One is called a "rice bowl" because its miniscule
size resemble grains of rice..
A short light and music
show reveals even more features of this beautiful room. The 100 ft. high ceiling
is dripping with multi-hued stalactites and the floor covered with stalagmites
of all shapes and sizes. A short trail leads to the "attic," an
area further above the throne room, providing another spectacular view of
the Throne Room.
After the show it is a
short walk back to the tunnel system and out to the tram.
