About the Program

Those of us who work in offices spend most of our day in front of the computer, at the reception desk, or hunkered over a lab project.

We know that good nutrition and physical activity are key to good health, but we don't really practice good health habits. Many of us commute 30 minutes or more each way to work, eat at our desks, and stress out over deadlines, reports, our children, management expectations and self-expectations. Who has time to be healthy while at work?

At ASU and throughout Eight's viewership are thousands of people who fit this description. We need an easy, fun and free program to help improve our physical stamina, lower blood pressure and increase our nutritional awareness. Well…..here it is! A program that is as convenient as getting up from our chairs, walking down the hall, and then getting rewarded for our success.

Be one of the special 1,000 people to enroll in this free, but challenging, program and receive special benefits. Plan to commit to staying on this program for three months to achieve and maintain a high level of wellness. We will support you along the way with advice and guidance from our walking expert, Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke of the ASU Exercise and Wellness Department. We will reward your successes with special gifts and offers and point you to sites where you will be able to share your experiences.

The Challenge : Make one change in your daily routine at work to positively impact your health – simply Take One Step . Participants will get up from their desk from four to six times per day and walk at least 400 steps each time.

The Reward : You will receive a gold certificate when you reach 10,000 steps per day, or when you increase your baseline steps by 50%. More rewards will be available for those who persevere with the program for the entire three months.

The Outcomes:

  • Increase the number of steps taken during the day.
  • Increase the ability to make healthy life choices.
  • Decrease your weight and improve your heart health.

Would you like to join this undertaking? It's quick and easy and fun.

This project is open to all ASU Faculty and Staff or any Eight viewer who presently spends most of his or her work day at a desk of some type. This program is designed to benefit office-based workers.

We need some basic information in order to send you a pedometer and health information. All the information you give us is strictly confidential, and will be destroyed when this project is finished.

To get started:

1.When using a pedometer, it is important to establish your baseline level of walking. You do this by wearing your pedometer for seven days, doing your usual amount of walking and physical exercise. Record your number of steps on a calendar of your choosing or download the easy-to-use chart. Be sure to reset your pedometer every morning, and wear it from the time you get dressed in the morning until you go to bed at night.

2.After recording the daily number of steps for seven days, calculate your average number of steps for the week. Divide the total steps by seven. You now know your baseline level.

3.What will it take to reach 10,000 steps a day within three months? Can you reach that goal by increasing your number of steps by at least 400 per week – or will it take more? Enter your baseline level, then calculate how many more steps you will need each week to reach the 10,000 (or more) goal.

4.Record your steps – daily or weekly. You can download a walking log to take with you, or simply record online.
