Southwest Symphony a Production of KAET/Phoenix, Rocky Mountain/PBS and Kued/Salt Lake City

A Unique Partnership

Southwest Symphony is the first joint production of KAET/Phoenix, Rocky Mountain PBS and KUED/Salt Lake City. The idea of matching outdoor scenes and live action footage with classical music was perfected and popularized on PBS by independent producer Michael Wanger, whose credits include the award-winning Nature's Symphony, Nature's Serenade and Wildlife Symphony. A similiar production based on the images of the Southwest was the perfect vehicle for this first-ever collaboration between the three public television stations. Each station had dramatic footage of their own area and they knew that this genre of programming had been enthusiastically received by PBS audiences.

The partners applied for and received funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting via the Pacific Mountain Network and agreed to share the balance of the costs. They then contracted with Wanger to produce the program and provided him with more than 40 hours of tapes, which he painstakingly edited and synchronized to carefully selected classical music exerpts.

The result of this unique collaboration is an extraordinary production that beautifully captures the spirit of the legendary American Southwest. By sharing resources and facilities, the stations realized significant cost savings and greatly enhanced the scope and variety of the program.
