Wills and Living Trusts |
The most common form of a planned gift is an estate gift to Eight/KAET through a bequest in the donor’s Will or a provision in a Living Trust established by the donor. Gifts or bequests in the Will or Living Trust are usually specified in either document as:
- a specific amount;
- a percentage of your total estate; or
- the residue or a percentage of the residue of your estate.
We have provided details for each, along with sample bequest language for your attorney.
1. A gift of a specific amount
You specify a dollar amount to be given to one or more charitable organizations. With this kind of gift, it is especially important to keep your will or trust up-to-date.
Sample bequest language for your attorney for this approach:
"I give (insert specific amount or asset) to the Arizona State University Foundation, a separate, non-profit corporation, located in Tempe, Arizona, to be used by it for the benefit of Arizona State University's affiliate Public Television Station, Eight/KAET, in Phoenix, Arizona. Should Eight/KAET cease to exist my gift shall then be used for the benefit of the Public Television Station then-existing and affiliated with Arizona State University."
2. A percentage of your total estate
In using this approach, your gift adjusts with changes in the size of your estate.
Sample bequest language for your attorney for this approach:
"I give (insert dollar amount or percentage of estate) to the Arizona State University Foundation, a separate, nonprofit corporation, located in Tempe, Arizona, to be used by it for the benefit of Arizona State University's affiliate Public Television Station, Eight/KAET, in Phoenix, Arizona. Should Eight/KAET cease to exist my gift shall then be used for the benefit of the Public Television Station then-existing and affiliated with Arizona State University."
3. The residue or a percentage of the residue of your estate
After your specific gifts to loved ones have been made, you may designate that the entire residue or a percentage of the remainder shall go to one or more charitable organizations. With this approach as well, your gift adjusts with changes in the size of your estate.
Sample bequest language for your attorney for this approach:
"I give the rest and residue of the property I own at my death to the Arizona State University Foundation, a separate, non-profit corporation, located in Tempe, Arizona, to be used by it for the benefit of Arizona State University's affilate Public Television Station, Eight/KAET, in Phoenix, Arizona. Should Eight/KAET cease to exist my gift shall then be used for the benefit of the Public Television Station then-existing and affiliated with Arizona State University."
