An accountant by profession, Calvin Goode is best known as the first African-American Phoenix City Councilman. Serving on the council for 22 years, his greatest concerns were education and safe, affordable housing for his community. In "retirement" he spends his time at his old high school, which is now the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, working to preserve the history of the African-American community in Phoenix.Stories of Arizona, a series showcasing the people and history of Arizona, airs Mondays at 7 p.m. on Channel 8 beginning June 3, 2002. New episodes will air through September.
