About KAET

With more than 1.7 million people turning to Channel 8 each week, KAET regularly ranks among the most-viewed public television stations per capita in the country. A trusted community resource, KAET enriches the lives of Arizonans through quality programs and educational services. Channel 8 began broadcasting from the campus of Arizona State University in 1961.

KAET specializes in the education of children, unbiased news and public affairs, lifelong learning, and the celebration of arts and culture — through the power of noncommercial television, the Internet, educational outreach services, and community-based initiatives.

On the air and online

The PBS programming on Channel 8 includes landmark series such as Nova, Frontline, American Experience, Great Performances and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. And each week more than 450,000 children tune in to Sesame Street, Arthur, Barney & Friends, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Caillou, Cyberchase, Mister Rogers Neighborhood, and other kids’ programming favorites.

KAET also produces its own award-winning programs. Especially noteworthy is HORIZON, an award-winning public affairs show. Each weeknight government officials, business leaders and policy makers discuss the issues, laws and policies that affect Arizonans in their everyday lives. Hosted by Phoenix attorney Michael Grant, HORIZON airs Monday through Friday at 7 p.m.

KAET's latest weekly series, HORIZONTE, provides a forum for Hispanic perspectives and helps educate all audiences about issues of particular interest to the Latino community. Phoenix attorney José Cárdenas serves as host Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

The Arizona Collection, is KAET’s continuing series of programs celebrating the people, places and history of Arizona. Monumental Arizona is the latest production. Other titles include the Arizona Memories trilogy, Ranch Album, Kolb Brothers: Grand Canyon Pioneers, and the Emmy Award-winning Barry Goldwater: Photographs & Memories, Thieves of Time, Images of Arizona, Southwest Symphony, Over Arizona and Legends & Dreamers: Inspired by Arizona Highways.

KAET’s online presence continues to expand with companion Web sites for local productions. Both the HORIZON and HORIZONTE Web sites are regularly accessed by viewers to read transcripts and find ancillary information, and to send feedback and questions to the in-studio guests. The KAET Web site also features updated programming schedules and upcoming event information. The station Web address is www.azpbs.org

In the classroom and the community

KAET provides learning and enrichment activities for all ages. Through caregiver workshops and book distribution, KAET's "Ready to Learn" outreach project has helped more than 13,000 children begin school ready to learn. This year more than 420,000 students were helped by KAET in partnership with ASSET (Arizona School Services through Educational Technology), and 25,000 teachers utilized ASSET's professional development resources. Adults can earn high school diplomas through the GED programs and college credits through Arizona State University telecourses.

Most recently, KAET launched Small Business Partners. The program is designed to provide networking opportunities, a comprehensive online business center with local and national resources, and affordable television marketing.

Trusted

Guided by community interests and values, and aided by our non-commercial status, independence and local ownership, KAET is committed to the future of Arizona’s children, communities and the state.

KAET’s programming and community initiatives promote and stimulate local culture, encourage civic participation, foster public dialogue and educate and inform in ways that provide opportunities for Arizonans to improve their lives and livelihoods.
