Plan Your Trip

Location:
Wupatki National Monument is approximately 30 miles northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Driving Directions from Phoenix:
Take I-17 north to Flagstaff. From Flagstaff, take US 89 north for 12 miles, turn right at sign for Sunset Crater Volcano - Wupatki National Monuments. The Visitor Center is 21 miles from this junction.

The Wupatki Pueblo Trail, a half-mile, self-guided tour of the largest pueblo in the Flagstaff area, starts at the Visitor Center. Programs & hikes are scheduled daily during the summer. Contact the Visitor Center for program times. Additional hikes may be scheduled in the spring and fall.

Camping:
Camping is not allowed in the park. Bonito Campground is located across from the Sunset Crater Visitor Center, 18 miles south, and is generally open from March through October, weather dependent. Maximum vehicle size is 35 feet, no hookups. For further information, contact the U.S. Forest Service at 928-527-3600 or visit the Coconino National Forest web site.

Facilities:
At the visitor center, museum exhibits are available. Other facilities include a picnic area and restrooms.

Required Permits:
Backcountry hiking is allowed by permit only. Permits are available free of charge at the visitor center.

Safety:
Visitors should bring ample water to avoid dehydration. They should be alert for rattlesnakes and other animals that inhabit the area.
