PROTECT ARIZONA MARRIAGE INITIATIVE IN EARLY TROUBLE

GOV. NAPOLITANO CONTINUES TO ENJOY POSITIVE RATINGS

BUSH RATINGS FALL BELOW 50 PERCENT

A new statewide telephone poll of 390 registered voters conducted by KAET-TV/Channel 8 and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University Sept. 22 25 found that the proposed Protect Marriage Arizona initiative is in early trouble. Thirty-three percent of those surveyed said they would vote for the initiative, 60 percent would vote against it and 7 percent were undecided.

The survey found that one reason the initiative may be in trouble is that while Arizonans tend to be about evenly divided on whether there should be a ban on gay marriages (41 percent favorable to 49 percent opposed) voters favor allowing partners of unmarried workers to receive domestic benefits. Thirty-six percent favor banning domestic partner benefits, while 57 percent are opposed.

The survey also found that 69 percent of the registered voters in Arizona approve of the job Gov. Janet Napolitano is doing. Nineteen percent disapproved and 12 percent said they had no opinion. A slight majority of Republicans (51 percent), 90 percent of Democrats and 70 percent of political independents give the governor favorable job performance ratings.

Forty-three percent of Arizona voters gave President George W. Bush a positive job performance rating. Fifty-two percent disapproved and 5 percent said they had no opinion. Voters gave identical 49 percent positive ratings for the way the President handled hurricane Katrina and the war on terrorism. Thirty-seven percent approved of the way the President is handling the economy, 37 percent approved of the way he is handling the war in Iraq and 18 percent gave the President favorable ratings for the way he has handled rising gasoline prices.

The survey has a sampling error of plus or minus 5.0 percent. Fifty-eight percent of the interviews were conducted in Maricopa County, 18 percent in Pima County, and 24 percent in the less populated counties. The sample was 39 percent Republican, 35 percent Democrat and 26 percent independent or other. Fifty-two percent of voters interviewed were female and 48 percent were male.
