ARIZONANS FEEL STATE IS GROWING TOO FAST BUT ARE SPLIT OVER WHETHER GROWTH SHOULD BE LIMITED

STRONG SUPPORT FOR WAR IN IRAQ CONTINUES IN ARIZONA

A new statewide poll of registered voters conducted by KAET-TV/Channel 8 and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University between April 24 - 27, 2003, found that a majority (58%) of registered voters in Arizona feel the state is growing too fast. Four percent (4%) said Arizona is not growing fast enough, 34% felt the growth rate was about right and 4% had no opinion.

When asked about the rate of growth in the area where they live, 56% were either very (22%) or somewhat (34%) concerned. Forty-three percent (43%) had no concerns and 1% had no opinion. Democrats were more concerned about growth than Republicans. The older people were, the more likely they were to feel that Arizona is growing too fast. People with less formal education and females were other groups concerned about growth.

When asked if they would support limiting growth where they live, opinion was evenly split. Forty-three percent (43%) supported limits, 44% opposed them and 13% said they had no opinion. Support or opposition to limiting growth cut across all political and demographic groups with the exception of age. The older people were, the more likely they were to be in favor of limitations on growth.

The poll also found that Arizonans continue to support President Bush's decision to use military force in Iraq. Seventy-four percent (74%) of those interviewed said Bush made the right decision, 17% were opposed and 9% had no opinion. Republicans, self-identified political conservatives and people with a high school education were most likely to support Bush's decision to go to war.

The statewide poll of 586 registered voters has a sampling error of plus or minus 4.0%. Fifty-one percent (51%) of those interviewed were female, 49% male. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of the interviews were conducted in Maricopa County, 18% in Pima County, and 25% in the less populated counties. The sample consisted of 42% Republicans, 36% Democrats and 22% independents.
