The Colorado River was one of the last areas of the continental United States to be explored. That fact changed in 1869 when a 35-year-old professor of natural history and war veteran set about on a grand adventure.
John Wesley Powell dedicated over three years to the exploration of the Green and Colorado rivers as well as the Grand Canyon. Today, Lake Powell bears his name.
Narrated by Robert Redford, Powell’s second epic journey is recreated in River of Stone:The Powell Expedition. In this Eight presentation, one hundred and twenty years after the original voyage, the filmmakers follow the route of Powell's wooden dories through a landscape that has been greatly changed by human intervention. Archival photographs, excerpts from Powell's writings and new film footage bring the history and controversies surrounding the rivers into focus.
