Robert McGrathIt is hard to believe that a chef as talented as BJ Hernandez never attended culinary school, but even without the training she has continued to make her restaurant, the Havana Café, a success. The restaurant’s cuisine is based off of old family recipes of her and her husband, Gilbert’s, families. Her husband’s Cuban heritage has been the main influence on the restaurant’s atmosphere and dishes. Chef BJ not only tries to make the dishes taste the best, she also wants them to look the best. As a prior art teacher, she is knowledgeable about shapes and colors. She uses this to her advantage to make each dish visually appealing so it is an intriguing as it is delicious.
