About the Author

Deborah Laake was a staff writer, columnist, editor and executive at New Times who also worked as a columnist for the Dallas Morning News in the 1980s. She was a decorated journalist and was named Arizona's Journalist of the Year in 1988. In 1983, Laake won a special citation from the University of Missouri for her feature writing. She won Arizona's feature-column writing award in 1987 and first place from the National Headliner awards for feature writing in 1991.

 

About this Book

Laake, who was a member of the Mormon Church, describes the rituals and behaviors revealed to her on her wedding day and the male dominance, strange teachings and divine revelations characteristic of her religion. "Secret Ceremonies" chronicles a painful odyssey of self-liberation that included failed marriages, two nervous breakdowns with hospitalization and the slow recognition of her worth as a woman.
