    • The Arizona Department of Economic Security, which oversees Child Protective Services, has come out with a plan to investigate over 6,000 uninvestigated child abuse cases by January 31. DES Director Clarence Carter says nearly 3,000 of those cases have already been reviewed. Over 1,700 have been sent to case workers. Mary Jo Pitzl of the Arizona Republic has been covering the story, and will bring us up to date on the report.

  • Putting the Brakes on Inflammation  |   Video
    • A team led by a University of Arizona researcher has discovered a previously unknown mechanism that prevents the immune system from going into overdrive. That could shed light not only on how our body controls its response to pathogens but on conditions such as autoimmune diseases, allergies and chronic inflammation. The group found a protein previously believed to only play a role in blood clotting acts to tell defense cells to slow down, thereby preventing an immune reaction from spiraling out of control. Sourav Ghosh, assistant professor in the department of cellular and molecular medicine at the UA College of Medicine, and Dr. Jonathan Leighton of the Mayo Clinic will discuss the new findings.

    • Arizona Public Service released a plan recently to charge residential customers who install solar panels $50 to $100 more a month. The utility says the charges are needed to maintain the electricity grid, but the move is facing lots of opposition, including a vote by the Cave Creek town council to oppose the plan. Barbara Lockwood, General Manager of Energy Innovation for APS, will discuss the plan.

    • The Arizona Department of Health Services has set an August 7 deadline for medical marijuana dispensaries to open after receiving their certificate for operation. Several dispensaries say they have been bogged down by court fights over medical marijuana, and have sued to get more time to open. Three days of hearings are being held to determine if those operators will get more time. Department of Health Services Director Will Humble will talk about the hearing and give us an update on medical marijuana.
  • Yarnell Hill Fire Site  |   Video
    • The Yarnell Hill Fire Site, where 19 Hotshot firefighters lost their lives, was opened to the media for the first time this week. KTAR fire reporter Jim Cross visited the site and will talk about his experience and show pictures he took there.
  • Charities Performance Indicator  |   Video
    • A major announcement was recently made in the charity world regarding a key indicator of a non-profit’s performance. Guidestar, Charity Navigator and Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance are the three national organizations that set the leading criteria of a nonprofit’s performance: overhead ratio, the percent spent on administrative and fund raising costs. However, the three organizations just sent out a letter denouncing those criteria as a leading indicator. Steve Zabilski, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul and Ellen Solowey, Program Officer for the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, will discuss the development.

    • New numbers have been released on tourism in Arizona. The Arizona Office of Tourism reports that 38.1 million people visited Arizona in 2012, with $19.3 Billion in direct spending. Sherry Henry, Director of the office of tourism, will talk about the numbers and more.

    • The Arizona State Retirement System is a $28 Billion system with over half-a-million members. Its ten-year-rate of return has been over six percent. Paul Matson, the Chief Executive of the Arizona State Retirement System, will give us a status update on the pension system and will talk about a plan being proposed in congress that would uses private insurance companies to pay out annuities for public pensions.

    • Judges at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments on both sides of the case regarding Arizona English language learners requirement to pass the AIMS test. In April, appellate judges agreed to continue to block enforcement of a trial judges order that the state cannot deny diplomas to students classified as English language learners just because they failed to pass the standardized test. Reporter Howard Fischer joins us from San Francisco with an update.
  • Light rail update
    • Construction of the METRO light rail project is well underway. The bridge over Town Lake Bridge is almost completed and the Light Rail trains are currently being manufactured in Japan. Valley Metro CEO Rick Simonetta, appears on HORIZON to give us an update.
