While that may make our lives easier, there will be consequences for state and local governments, who depend on traffic tickets as a source of revenue. That’s just one example of how technology will have outcomes that may not be desired by some. Arizona State University School of Public Affairs professor Kevin DeSouza will discuss how innovation could produce unintended consequences.

  • New Study on Teen Driver Crashes  |   Video
    • A new study by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety dissects why teenagers crash. The study analyzed the six seconds leading up to a crash in videos of 1,700 crashes by teen drivers. It found that distraction was a factor in nearly six out of 10 moderate-to-severe teen crashes. Michelle Donati-Grayman of AAA Arizona will discuss the unique study.

  • The “Spine” I-17/I-10 Corridor  |   Video
    • The “Spine” is a section of the Interstate 17/Interstate 10 corridor that carries almost half the traffic in the Phoenix area. Public input is being sought to make improvements to the Spine. Bob Hazlett, senior engineering project manager for the Maricopa Association of Governments and project manager for the Spine Study, will discuss the plans.

  • Arpaio Racial Profiling Update  |   Video
    • A hearing was held Friday by a federal judge who ruled Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office was racially profiling Latinos. At the hearing, lawyers who filed the racial profiling lawsuit were expected to ask for more training for officers, better record keeping for traffic stops and a monitor to make sure the racial profiling stops. Arizona Republic Reporter JJ Hensley will give us an update.
