    • Three Veterans were honored at the 11th annual Heroes Patriotic Luncheon, hosted by the Veterans’ Medical Leadership Council. Manny Lugo is an Arizona native who was drafted by the Army in 1969, but volunteered for the Marines instead. He fought in many battles in Vietnam, and sustained a shrapnel wound in 1970. Tracy Lea is a Third-Class Petty Officer in the US Navy Reserves. She serves as an avionics technician, providing maintenance on the C-40 Clipper aircraft. Les Nagy, a native of Northville, Michigan, entered military service in 1950 and served as a demolition and construction specialist, laying and disarming mines in the Korean War. All three tell their stories of service to our country.

    • When crews building the Arizona Canal in the 1880s reached the area south of Camelback Mountain, they found a ridge of hard rock in their way. Instead of blasting it, they let the water flow over it and Arizona Falls was born. It was a place where people gathered to socialize and escape from the heat.     • A look back at the career and accomplishments of the only politician in Arizona who was a senator, governor and chief justice of the State Supreme Court. Ernest McFarland was the man who got the G.I. Bill passed, which increased educational opportunities for U.S. veterans. He was also instrumental, with Senator Carl Hayden, in obtaining water for Arizona with the Central Arizona Project.

  • Arizona Stories Tovrea Castle
    • Tovrea Castle was born out of the vision of Italian immigrant Alessio Carraro. Carraro came to Phoenix in 1928 with a dream to build a resort hotel castle surrounded by an exotic cactus garden and a subdivision of deluxe homes. While Carraros dream of a hotel-resort never came to be, he still built the castle, which was purchased by stockyard mogul E.A. Tovrea in 1931. We tell the story of the unique home and how it became the historic Arizona icon that it is today.
