A new report on Arizona suicides has been created. It’s called the Arizona Violent Death Reporting System, and the first report shows a high rate of suicide among older Arizonans. Seniors who are military veterans had the highest suicide rate. Divorced seniors and men over the age of 85 also had a higher risk of suicide. The report was prepared by the ASU Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety. Vincent Webb, a researcher at the center and a professor of practice in the ASU School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, will tell us about the report.
The Arizona Department of Health Services and Magellan Health Services of Arizona are recipients of a national award from the Council of State Governments for the Arizona Programmatic Suicide Deterrent System which launched in 2009. Dr. Karen Chaney of Magellan provides an overview of the program.
The suspected shooter in Wednesday’s murder-suicide in Gilbert, that left five people dead, is a man with past ties to a neo-Nazi organization. He was also the founder of an armed vigilante group that patrolled Arizona’s southern border for illegal immigrants. Learn more about J.T. Ready and the status of hate groups in Arizona from Bill Straus, Executive Director of the Arizona Anti-Defamation League.
