  • Arizona’s Future: Beyond Textbooks  |   Video
    • In a new Arizona Horizon series, “Arizona’s Future,” we look at innovations leading to improvements in a variety of areas, including education. In the Vail Unified School District in southern Arizona, teachers and district officials have created a web-based solution to help meet Common Core standards. The site provides lesson plans and data that educators can use to meet the standards, and any educator can add resources, lesson plans or ideas to the site. It’s being used by 77 traditional public school districts and eight charter schools in Arizona. Kevin Carney, executive director of Beyond Textbooks, will explain how the site helps teachers improve their teaching abilities.

  • AZ Giving and Leading: Fix.Adopt.Save. Campaign  |   Video
    • Nearly 90,000 dogs and cats came into Maricopa County shelters last year, the second highest county intake in the U.S. after Los Angeles County. There is a solution. The Fix.Adopt.Save. initiative is designed to increase spay/neuter surgeries and adoptions. Heather Sheston, project manager for Fix.Adopt.Save., and Melissa Gable, a spokeswoman of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, will discuss the issue.

  • Sustainability: Recovered Phosphorus  |   Video
    • Phosphorus is a key ingredient in fertilizer used to grow our food, but the supply is finite and shortages could disrupt our food chain. Arizona State University professors James Elser and Bruce Rittmann have recommended a three-part solution to this looming crisis, which involves recovering phosphorus from agricultural and human waste. Elser and Rittman will discuss their proposal.

    • Law schools are pumping out more graduates than can find good jobs and who are loaded down with student-loan debt. Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law has a partial solution. It plans to create an “Alumni Law Group” to give jobs to 30 law school graduates. ASU Law School Dean Doug Sylvester will discuss the program.

    • Every day, thousands of pounds of produce rots in our landfills, producing the greenhouse gas methane. A Utah company that has expanded into Arizona has come up with a solution. EcoScraps takes that rotting produce and turns it into high-grade soil that is sold in local nurseries. Brandon Sargent, one of the founders of EcoScraps, will talk about what his company does.

    • since AIDS was first detected in 1981, 9,000 Arizonans have been infected. In a half-hour special, HORIZON examines how trends have shifted over the years and the state of AIDS in Arizona today. We look at Body Positive, a local community organization fighting AIDS, running clinical trials on new treatments for HIV. While AIDS continues to ravage many parts of the world, Arizona is playing a role in finding a solution. A team at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University has developed an immune agent that creates a protective immune response in mouse models of HIV.
