 Video - Maricopa County has launched a new phase of its six-year-old Green Government Program. The county has implemented hundreds of green measures, such as recycling, energy conservation and installing four megawatts of solar panels. Jonce Walker, the sustainability manager for the county, will talk about sustainability efforts by the county.
May 8, 2013- Biomimicry and Janine Benyus | Video
- Biomimicry is innovation inspired by nature that is used to create a healthier, more sustainable planet. One example is solar cells that mimic leaves. Another is paint that mimics leaf surfaces to be self-cleaning with just water. Janine Benyus co-founded the world’s first bio-inspired consultancy, which has done work for more than 250 clients. Benyus will receive the Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa for her groundbreaking work specializing in biomimicry at the Arizona State University undergraduate commencement ceremony May 9. She will appear on Arizona Horizon to talk about biomimicry and her work.
May 7, 2013- Solar Impulse | Video
- Saturday just after midnight, history was made at Sky Harbor Airport. That’s when the solar-powered plane “Solar Impulse” landed on the first stop of its trip across the country. The plane can fly at 40-miles-per-hour day or night. Pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg talk about the revolutionary aircraft.

- A hearing was held recently on a proposed 300-megawatt solar power plant in Maricopa. The Maricopa Solar Park Project would be built on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. BLM Arizona representative Dennis Godfrey will discuss the idea.

- We hit a record for electricity demand last month and are just now coming into the usual normal summer energy-use peak time. HORIZON reports on the summer energy demand. Plus, the Arizona Corporation Commission has a proposal to increase the amount of renewable energy required of the state's utilities from 1.1 percent to 15 percent. It's controversial because solar, natural gas and other renewable energy costs more. Given our state's growth, the state agency says it is necessary.
