    • The owners of a Phoenix coffee shop turn to community members to help transform a vacant lot into a “pocket park." Co-owners Laryn Callaway and Christiaan Blok raised $23,000 to cover the landscaping costs, which include Chinese pistache trees, seating and a patch of lawn where they plan to offer Yoga and other classes. The couple hopes to collaborate with Arizona State University students to build a communal table and benches to promote more community gathering and an urban green space.

    • An Arizona man has a rare talent and intense passion for fixing clocks. Frank Beaudrot has spent decades bringing family heirlooms back to life. His shop is filled with a variety of clocks -grandfathers, mantles, and cuckoos- some dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. In special cases, Beaudrot even makes house calls.

    • Local First Arizona/Arizona Chain Reaction is a nonprofit organization that encourages Arizona consumers to shop at locally owned, independent businesses. They say when doing so, 45 cents of every dollar stays in state versus only 13 cents of every dollar spent at a national chain. They are asking Arizonans to support Arizona-based businesses during Independents Week, July 2 through July 8. Kimber Lanning, executive director of Local First Arizona, joins the studio discussion.
