  • Casino Ruling  |   Video
    • The U.S. Department of Interior issued a ruling last Thursday, giving the Tohono O’odham tribe final approval to make land it owns near Glendale part of the Tucson-area reservation. That removes a major obstacle for a casino to be built on the land. Heidi McNeil Staudenmaier, a partner in the Snell and Wilmer law firm and an expert on Indian and gaming law, discusses the ruling.

    • The Yavapai Community of the Fort McDowell Reservation east of the Phoenix area has fought for rights that have had nationwide implications. The Yavapai fought and won in court for voting rights in the 1940s, battled a federal dam and were the first to have gaming. In the 1970s, tribal elders Mike Harrison and John Williams sought to have their history recorded as they themselves knew it, passed down orally from generation to generation. The effort resulted in a book “Oral History of the Yavapai.” Book editor Caroline Butler will talk about the book.

    • Gila River Indian Community members voted down a plan to put the South Mountain (Loop 202) freeway expansion on the reservation. Now, a group of Gila River residents are collecting signatures to try to force another vote. Joseph Perez and Nathaniel Percharo explain why the want a new election.
