  • After School Education  |   Video
    • The Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence is proposing quality standards for out-of-school-time programs. The standards, “School’s Out, Make It Count: Arizona Quality Standards for Out-of-School Programs,” were produced in partnership with the Valley of the Sun United Way. They were based on statewide input from out-of-school time providers, educators, families, business leaders and policymakers. Melanie McClintock, executive director of the Center, will discuss the standards.

  • Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards  |   Video
    • For the 12th consecutive year, Arizona Forward, in partnership with SRP, presented the 33rd Annual Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards. Known as the “Academy Awards” of the environmental community, the awards spotlight distinguished projects throughout the Valley that demonstrate a high level of environmental commitment and contribute to sustainability. Diane Brossart, President and CEO of Arizona Forward, will discuss the awards.

    • A half-dozen Arizona lawmakers went to Mexico City recently on mission to establish a permanent Arizona presence in that city and to seek out partnerships in the business and political worlds. House Speaker Andy Tobin led the mission, and will talk about trip.

  • Common Core  |   Video
    • New curriculum standards called “Common Core” go into full implementation this year at Arizona public schools. Arizona has joined 46 other states to use the Common Core standards for K-12 math and English. The standards will be tested using the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test. Schools are facing challenges in implementing the new standards and testing. Denise Birdwell, the superintendent of the Higley Unified School District, will talk about the challenges schools face in implementing the new standards.

  • Avondale Mayor/Education Secretary  |   Video
    • Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers met with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, other mayors and school superintendents in Washington, D.C. recently. They discussed partnership opportunities between cities and the U.S. Department of Education to create effective approaches to education reform. Mayor Rogers, the National League of Cities’ President, will talk about what was discussed in that meeting.

  • Metropolitan Business Plan  |   Video
    • The authors of a new book, “The Metropolitan Revolution: How Cities and Metros are Fixing our Broken Politics and Fragile Economy,” say power is shifting from Washington D.C. to cities and metro areas. That book has given impetus to the Brookings Institution’s “Metropolitan Business Plan,” which adopts the discipline of private sector planning to the task of revitalizing a region. Through a partnership with Brookings, the Metropolitan Business Plan provides a framework through which leaders can analyze the market position of a regional economy, identify strategies to capitalize on unique assets, and design and implement initiatives for change. Mayors in our regions have organized a high-level Steering Committee to guide the development of a new economic growth plan. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Barry Broome, President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, and Steve Seleznow, President and CEO of the Arizona Community Foundation, will talk about the Metropolitan Business Plan.

    • The Governor's Celebration of Innovation awards were recently handed out. The annual gala where the awards are given is held by the Arizona Technology Council in partnership with the Arizona Commerce Authority. Technology leaders and innovators from companies and schools across the state are honored. Arizona Technology Council President and CEO Steve Zylstra will talk about the winners.

  • Racial Preferences Initiative
    • A group called the Arizona Civil Rights Initiative has filed to circulate petitions for an initiative that would eliminate race and gender preferences in state hiring, contracting and university admissions. Max McPhail, Executive Director of the group, will be on Horizon to explain the initiative.
  • MRSA Superbug
    • The heavy news coverage of antibiotic-resistant staph infection known as MRSA worries the health care community and the general public. Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, deputy state epidemiologist for the Arizona Department of Health Services, explains why it is so prevalent and what can be done about it.
  • East Valley Partnership
    • Expanded freeways and Kids Voting are two projects that were developed by the East Valley Partnership. Roc Arnett, President and CEO of the East Valley Partnership, and Charles Wahlheim, one of the original founders of the group, will talk about what EVP has done as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

  • Alzheimer's Awareness
    • November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. It is marked by events around the Valley and the state including the opening of the new Banner Alzheimer's Institute. The Institute staffed by world-class researchers and physicians who provide compassionate care to patients and their families and caregivers, while also finding treatment and prevention therapies for those afflicted with the disease. Dr. Pierre Tariot, Banner Alzheimer's Institute's Associate Director and Director of its Memory Disorders Clinic joins Horizon in the studio.
  • MPAC and PHX: 21st Century City
    • Maricopa Partnership for Arts and Culture (MPAC) develops and implements entrepreneurial partnerships that advance arts and culture as an important part of the region's economic prosperity, distinctiveness and vibrancy. One of those partnerships involves a new book called PHX: 21st Century City. Joining Michael Grant in the studio will be Myra Millinger, President & CEO, Maricopa Partnership for Arts and Culture, Edward Booth-Clibborn, Editor and Publisher, PHX: 21st Century City, and Nan Ellin, Author, PHX: 21st Century City.
