  • Environmental Plan for Navajo Generating Station  |   Video
    • The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed new rules that will require owners of the Navajo Generating Station to pay $1.1 billion dollars to limit emissions from the plant. Owners of the plant say if approved, that will force them to shut down the power plant. Much of the electricity from the plant is used to pump water uphill in the Central Arizona Project Canal. A technical working group has come up with an alternative plan, and the CAP is asking members of the public to contact the EPA by January 6 to support their plan. CAP General Manager David Modeer will discuss the issue, along with Marshall Johnson of To Nizhoni Ani, a group with a mission to protect and preserve the environment.

    • Apple has chosen Mesa as the site of its newest manufacturing plant. The facility will create 700 quality jobs in its first year of operation and 1,300 construction jobs. Arizona State University W.P. Carey School of Business professor Arnie Maltz will discuss the impact of the new plant.

  • Sustainability: Manufactures Air Quality Conference  |   Video
    • The Arizona Manufacturers Council and the Maricopa County Air Quality Department will be holding an air quality conference for the first time in several years. The conference will feature information regarding air quality standards crucial to manufacturing and the future of air quality regulations. Bert Acken, an environmental attorney for the firm Ryley, Carlock & Applewhite, will discuss the conference and air quality issues important to manufacturers.

  • Manufacturing Grant  |   Video
    • The Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Arizona State University were awarded a $170,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to accelerate manufacturing and aid in job creation. The “Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership” grant will be used to plan for an Innovation and Commercialization Center for Advanced Manufacturing in the Phoenix area. GPEC President and CEO Barry Broome and Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, Senior Vice President for ASU’s Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development, will discuss the grant and the planned manufacturing center.

  • Climate Change Negotiations  |   Video
    • A group of Arizona State University professors and students traveled to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn, Germany recently, where the students presented white papers on international climate change negotiations. Daniel Bodansky, an ASU professor of Law, Ethics and Sustainability, and law student Ashley Votruba, will talk about the trip, climate change negotiations and the paper presented by Votruba. She focused on the impact of bottom-up approaches to protecting wetlands internationally and preventing the rapid depletion of plant life and loss of top soil in desert and arid regions.

  • AZ Technology & Innovation: 3D Printing  |   Video
    • 3D printing has been around for a while, but it is just starting to make a big impact on mainstream society. Tempe-based Phoenix Analysis and Design Technologies is a 3D printing company that was started in 1994 and offers a variety of services, including product simulation, design prototyping and medical devices. The company is also the largest distributor of 3D printing and manufacturing systems in the Southwest. Eric Miller of PADT will talk about his company and 3D printing.

    • The Interior Department announced approval for three new solar power plants, one in Arizona and two in Nevada. Dennis Godfrey of the Arizona office of The Bureau of Land Management will talk about the Arizona solar power plant, to be located near Quartzite. The Quartzite Solar Energy Project will be capable of generating 100 megawatts of electricity.
