  • American Graduate: Arizona’s Graduation Rate  |   Video
    • American Graduate Day is coming up. It’s a day when PBS stations around the nation dedicate hours of programming to showcasing efforts to keep students on the path to graduation. Eight, Arizona PBS is joining that movement, and will kick off a new “American Graduate” series with a look at Arizona’s graduation rate. Dr. Joseph O’Reilly, student achievement director for Mesa Public Schools, and Rebecca Gau, director of Stand for Children Arizona, a group working to improve education in our state, will discuss who is graduating, who is not and why. Also, you’ll hear the story of one student who has come back to school.

    • A bill being tied into the new “Common Core” education standards is facing strong criticism from those who see it as a national takeover of education. The bill, while not mentioning Common Core, would allow the state to transition from the AIMS test to another as a high school graduation requirement. Representative Heather Carter and Laddie Shane of the Maricopa County Republican Party discuss the pros and cons of the issue.

  • Arizona High School Graduation Rate  |   Video
    • Arizona's high school graduation rate has jumped 24 percent over the past decade, the highest increase in the nation. Part of that growth can be attributed to a ten percent increase in the Latino graduation rate from 2005 to 2011. Bill Hart of ASU's Morrison Institute and Dr. Kent Scribner, Superintendent of the Phoenix Union High School District, will discuss what led to the increase.
