  • Sustainability: Rio Verde Community Association Award  |   Video
    • The Rio Verde Community Association has been designated as the first Certified Sustainable Community in Arizona by the Audubon International Sustainable Communities Program. To become certified, the association had to meet measurable goals addressing 15 focus areas, including wildlife conservation, habitat enhancement, water conservation, energy efficiency, health, and transportation. Gary Holcomb, president of the association, will tell us more.

  • Sustainability: Biosphere2 Conference  |   Video
    • A national workshop is being held at Biosphere2, the self-contained facility in Southern Arizona that contains several artificial ecosystems. The workshop will include academics and business leaders who will be looking at how to deliver food, energy and water more efficiently. It’s the first of several national workshops sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Ardeth Barnhart, program director of renewable energy at the University of Arizona and Kim Ogden, professor of chemical and environmental engineering, also at the U of A, will discuss the conference and its goals.

    • In a time of declining federal funding, a new volunteer group, Friends of the Tonto National Forest, has been formed to help with natural and cultural resource management and promotion of forest policies, programs and projects. Carrie Templin, the public affairs officer for the Tonto National Forest, and Art Wirtz, President of the Friends group, will discuss the goals of the new organization.

    • Governor Jan Brewer has created a team to provide oversight for the 6,000 child abuse cases not investigated by Child Protective Services. The Child Advocate Response Examination Team, or “CARE Team,” will also examine CPS to point out areas of concern. CARE Team chair and Director of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections, Charles Flanagan, and CARE Team member representative Kate Brophy McGee will talk about the organization and its goals.

    • A committee that is looking at ways to improve Child Protective Services met for the first time last week, more than a year after it was created. Lawmakers failed to appoint members to the committee in time to send a report to the Governor, but a bill this year resurrected the committee. Committee Co-chair Nancy Barto will discuss the group and talk about its goals.

  • The Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Youth Band
    • The Sedona Jazz on the Rocks (SJOR) festival is right around the corner (Sept. 26 -30). One of the goals of the festival is to provide an environment for talented high school jazz musicians to expand their musicianship and performance techniques. Twelve young musicians from seven Arizona high schools have been selected as members of this band. They rehearse and perform around the state with SJOR musicians leading up to the festival. We catch up with the Youth Band while theyre in town for a gig.
