  • NAFTA 20 Year Anniversary  |   Video
    • It’s been 20 years since the North American Free Trade Agreement was put into place. It was designed to eliminate investment and trade barriers between the United States, Mexico and Canada. An international conference will be held at Arizona State University in March regarding NAFTA. Jonathan Koppell, Dean of ASU’s College of Public Programs, will discuss how the trade agreement has impacted Arizona and the three countries it covers.

    • Alan Weisman, author of the bestselling book “The World Without Us,” will talk about his latest book, “Countdown: Our Last, Best Hope for a Future on Earth.” In his follow-up to “The World Without Us,” Weisman looks at how prospects for a sustainable human future seem ever more in doubt. Weisman traveled to more than 20 countries to ask: How many humans can the planet hold without capsizing? He also examined what in different cultures’ beliefs might suggest that human growth may have to be limited. In his book, Weisman suggests the fastest, most acceptable, practical, and affordable way of returning our planet to balance. Weisman will talk about his book on Arizona Horizon.

    • Arizona State University researchers will discuss their findings regarding the causes of obesity. Dr. James Levine, co-director of the Mayo Clinic-ASU Obesity Solutions Initiative, will talk about the impact of sitting on weight gain. Alexandra Brewis Slade, director of operations for the ASU-Mayo Obesity Solutions Initiative, will talk about her research that compares obesity in different countries.

    • The 3000 Club is a Phoenix-based charity that was born in 2008 as an idea to save a food bank that had lost its major donor. The idea was to get 3,000 supporters to donate $100 yearly. Besides feeding hungry families, the 3000 Club has expanded to include a farmers market, where you can buy 60 pounds of produce for $10, and a medical reclamation program to redistribute unused medical supplies to other countries. 3000 Club Co-founder and CEO Ethel Luzario will talk about her organization.

    • Weve heard of the housing bubble, but is there an "oil bubble" occurring in our economy? Crude oil has surged from $45-dollars per barrel in 2004 to a recent peak of more than $135 a barrel. Investor speculation, uncertainty over supplies and the rising demand from other countries are contributing to the debate over whether we are experiencing an oil bubble, and how long these high prices at the pump will last. Joining Horizon to help sort through the factors making up the skyrocketing price of gasoline is A-S-U Economist Tracy Clark.
