  • Arizona’s Future: Beyond Textbooks  |   Video
    • In a new Arizona Horizon series, “Arizona’s Future,” we look at innovations leading to improvements in a variety of areas, including education. In the Vail Unified School District in southern Arizona, teachers and district officials have created a web-based solution to help meet Common Core standards. The site provides lesson plans and data that educators can use to meet the standards, and any educator can add resources, lesson plans or ideas to the site. It’s being used by 77 traditional public school districts and eight charter schools in Arizona. Kevin Carney, executive director of Beyond Textbooks, will explain how the site helps teachers improve their teaching abilities.

    • New curriculum standards called “Common Core” go into full implementation this year at Arizona public schools. Arizona has joined 46 other states to use the Common Core standards for K-12 math and English. The standards will be tested using the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test. Schools are facing challenges in implementing the new standards and testing. Denise Birdwell, the superintendent of the Higley Unified School District, will talk about the challenges schools face in implementing the new standards.

The bill, while not mentioning Common Core, would allow the state to transition from the AIMS test to another as a high school graduation requirement. Representative Heather Carter and Laddie Shane of the Maricopa County Republican Party discuss the pros and cons of the issue.

    • Arizona is implementing new, more rigorous education standards this year. The Common Core Educational Standards have been adopted by 44 states to improve math and language skills among students. Arizona State Superintendent John Huppenthal and Arizona Education Association President Andrew Morrill will discuss the common core standards.
