May 7, 2013- Focus on Sustainability: Phoenix Cool Roofs |
 Video - The city of Phoenix has started a project to paint 70,000 square feet of rooftops white to cut energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Over the next year, an army of volunteers will paint rooftops at community centers, fire stations and housing communities as part of a $100,000 service grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Cynthia Aguilar, of the Phoenix Manager's Office, will talk about the Cool Roofs project.
April 15, 2013- In Memoriam: Paolo Soleri | Video
- Visionary architect Paolo Soleri passed away. He was the last living architect trained directly by Frank Lloyd Wright. Soleri constructed Arcosanti, north of Phoenix, a compact experimental community designed to efficiently house a small city on a small parcel of land. Local architects Vern Swaback and Roger Tomalty, who lived at Arcosanti and worked directly with Soleri, will talk about the famed architect’s life, work, and a new film on Soleri debuting April 20th.
April 10, 2013- AZ Technology & Innovation: Intel International Science and Engineering Fair | Video
- The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair will be held May 12-17 at the Phoenix Convention Center, with aspiring scientists from all over the world competing. Renee Levin, Intel’s community engagement manager, will talk about the fair. Sarah Sakha, a student from Xavier High School, will talk about her winning project, which seeks to develop emergency food products used in famine relief.
March 28, 2013- Arizona ArtBeat: “Soot and Spit” | Video
- The Arizona State University School of Theatre and Film is bringing to the Valley “Soot and Spit,” the story of artist James Castle, who was born deaf. He used materials at hand to create art, including soot from a woodstove mixed with saliva. The production brings together deaf and cognitively-challenged actors to illuminate the life of the self-taught Castle, who’s worked paralleled the art movements of the 20th century, although he worked isolated from the art community in a small Idaho town. The production is directed by New York artist Kim Weild, who will talk about “Soot and Spit” on Arizona Horizon.

November 28, 2006- Human Smuggling Conspiracy
- Community groups, state representatives and professors filed a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix against Maricopa County authorities over their interpretation of an Arizona law aimed at cracking down on human smugglers. The suit alleges that county officials are misusing the statute when they charge illegal immigrants with ``conspiring to transport themselves'' and violating the constitutional rights to due process and to bar unreasonable search and seizure.

- Buzz
Buzz is more than just a TV show. It comprises television, an interactive Web site (www.azpbs.org/buzz) and uniquely Arizona educational materials that help teachers meet new Arizona arts standards. Discussions for the concept showcasing Arizonas emerging arts scene began more than a year ago, eventually involving more than 20 community organizations.
The pilot episode features work by three Valley artists Phoenix Symphony violist and director of Downtown Chamber Series Mark Dix who brings chamber music to new audiences at downtown art galleries; fashion and ASU Dance Department costume designer Galina Mihaleva designs for dancers, models, rock stars and nanotechnologists; and urban designer and Dean of the ASU College of Design Wellington Reiter who envisions a Phoenix Sky Harbor airport where planes, condos and pools might one day co-exist. The pilot also lets viewers know where they can see and hear the work of the featured artists as well as other artists in the same fields.

- On August 6 athletes from around the world will compete in the annual Jewish Olympics known as the Maccabi Games right here in the Valley. Mark Shore, president and CEO of the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, will join Michael Grant to talk about the games impact on Arizona's economy.

July 24, 2006- AIDS in Arizona
- since AIDS was first detected in 1981, 9,000 Arizonans have been infected. In a half-hour special, HORIZON examines how trends have shifted over the years and the state of AIDS in Arizona today. We look at Body Positive, a local community organization fighting AIDS, running clinical trials on new treatments for HIV. While AIDS continues to ravage many parts of the world, Arizona is playing a role in finding a solution. A team at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University has developed an immune agent that creates a protective immune response in mouse models of HIV.
July 19, 2006- Hawaiian Documentary
- The Hawaiians: Reflecting Spirit, a film airing on Wednesday at 10 p.m. on Eight sheds light on the spiritual and community strength of a native people whose identity is deeply tied to their homeland. HORIZON talks with the filmmaker and a Hawaiian state official about programs to re-establish native language and cultural customs.

- Hundreds of Latino-elected officials from around the country make their way to Dallas, Texas, to talk about issues affecting the nation's Latino community.
June 15, 2006- ASU Summer Institute on Community
- Arizona State University and Valley of the Sun United Way are partnering for a three-day workshop focused on strengthening connections between various community groups, researchers, academics, students and social service professionals. The program will provide students and community organizations to the most recent developments in community research and practice. Valley of the Sun United Way Vice President, Community Initiatives Trinity Donovan joins Michael Grant in the studio.

- The HOPE VI Project is a federal grant-funded program created to rebuild old and/or severely distressed public housing. The project has turned one central Phoenix government housing project into a new mixed-income community.
