  • Export-Import Bank  |   Video
    • The Export-Import Bank of the United States provides loans and loan guarantees to businesses when other financing is not available. The bank’s charter will lapse on September 30 unless Congress acts. Business groups are concerned about the possible demise of the bank. Dennis Hoffman, director of the L. William Seidman Research Institute at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, will talk about what the bank does and its importance.

  • Arizona’s Future: Beyond Textbooks  |   Video
    • In a new Arizona Horizon series, “Arizona’s Future,” we look at innovations leading to improvements in a variety of areas, including education. In the Vail Unified School District in southern Arizona, teachers and district officials have created a web-based solution to help meet Common Core standards. The site provides lesson plans and data that educators can use to meet the standards, and any educator can add resources, lesson plans or ideas to the site. It’s being used by 77 traditional public school districts and eight charter schools in Arizona. Kevin Carney, executive director of Beyond Textbooks, will explain how the site helps teachers improve their teaching abilities.

The practice is being contested by some lawmakers as they work on the state budget. Chuck Essigs of the Arizona Association of School Business Officials will discuss how the practice works.

    • Some charter school students and their families are asking that the Arizona Court of Appeals reverse a Maricopa County Superior Court ruling from last April that upheld the current funding system for K-12 schools. Those filing the suit say that system gives much more money per pupil to traditional public school students. The plantiff’s attorney, Korey Langhofer, and Arizona Education Association President Andrew Morrill, will discuss the case and school funding for charter and traditional public schools.
