  • Deep Brain Stimulation  |   Video
    • For the first time in its history, the Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital performed an advanced form of brain surgery called deep brain stimulation on several children with dystonia. That’s a disease that produces chronic, involuntary contortions of the trunk and limbs. The procedure involves placing electrodes deep in the brain and then connecting them with a pacemaker-like device placed in the abdomen. The surgery has allowed children to walk again and perform everyday functions. Neurosurgeon Dr. Ratan Bhardwaj will discuss the procedure.

  • RNA Research in Brain Injuries  |   Video
    • Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Barrow Neurological Institute and the Translational Genomics Research Institute are going to study the role of extracellular RNA, or RNA located outside our body’s cells, as biomarkers in brain injuries that include hemorrhaging in the brain. Researchers will be working to develop a prognostic tool that will lead them to more effective treatments for a form of bleeding in the brain that affects approximately 12,000 premature babies. They are also going to look into the role of extracellular RNA in the development of blood vessel spasms following a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain. Dr. Jorge Arango, a research scientist at the Neuroscience Research for Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital, will explain the research.

  • AZ Giving and Leading: Soldier’s Best Friend  |   Video
    • Veterans returning from war sometimes do not return alone. They may be accompanied by post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries. Soldier’s Best Friend is a Glendale-based organization that pairs up service or therapeutic companion dogs with soldiers suffering the impacts of war. Most dogs are rescued from local shelters. We’ll take a look at veterans who are benefiting from service dogs provided by Soldier’s Best Friend.

    • Fire officials say its time to implement the firewise practices of creating defensible spaces around homes and buildings. Helen Graham, assistant state fire management officer for the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona, discusses how people can protect themselves from potential wildfires, even in urban areas.
  • Infant Brain Development
    • The New Directions Institute for Infant Brain Development is a nonprofit organization that teaches parents how best to stimulate learning in their children. This organizations program at St. Josephs Hospital shows parents the value of security and attention. ASU professor Dr. Jill Stamm, author of Bright from the Start, co-founded the program.
