  • Manufacturing Grant  |   Video
    • The Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Arizona State University were awarded a $170,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to accelerate manufacturing and aid in job creation. The “Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership” grant will be used to plan for an Innovation and Commercialization Center for Advanced Manufacturing in the Phoenix area. GPEC President and CEO Barry Broome and Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, Senior Vice President for ASU’s Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development, will discuss the grant and the planned manufacturing center.

    • The authors of a new book, “The Metropolitan Revolution: How Cities and Metros are Fixing our Broken Politics and Fragile Economy,” say power is shifting from Washington D.C. to cities and metro areas. That book has given impetus to the Brookings Institution’s “Metropolitan Business Plan,” which adopts the discipline of private sector planning to the task of revitalizing a region. Through a partnership with Brookings, the Metropolitan Business Plan provides a framework through which leaders can analyze the market position of a regional economy, identify strategies to capitalize on unique assets, and design and implement initiatives for change. Mayors in our regions have organized a high-level Steering Committee to guide the development of a new economic growth plan. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Barry Broome, President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, and Steve Seleznow, President and CEO of the Arizona Community Foundation, will talk about the Metropolitan Business Plan.

  • Voting Laws Referendum  |   Video
    • A referendum has been filed to try and overturn new voter laws approved by the state legislature. The Protect Your Right to Vote Committee has until September 12 to collect 86,405 valid signatures to put the laws on hold until the November 2014 general election. The new laws make it much tougher for third parties to get on the ballot, will tighten up rules on early voter lists and will make it harder for someone else to take your ballot to a polling place. Barry Hess of the Libertarian Party and former gubernatorial candidate will discuss the referendum on new voter laws, along with Tim Sifert of the Arizona Republican Party.
