    • The Albatross is a play based on the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and it had a run at one of New York City’s leading Off-Broadway theaters. It will be presented by the Arizona Theatre Company starting March 16 at the Herberger Theater in Phoenix. Hear more about the play from writers Matthew Spangler and Benjamin Evett.

  • Play: “Some Velvet Morning”  |   Video
    • The Tempe Center for the Arts will have its first production, “Some Velvet Morning.” The play looks at the issue of misogyny, and features a majority female cast and creative team. Ralph Remington, the new artistic director for the Tempe Center for the Arts, will discuss the production along with Marilyn Clark Silva, a founding member of Tandem Duo, which composed original music for the play. The play starts March 9 and leads up to “Disrupt Fest” on March 18, where people can immerse themselves in provocative theater and music.

    • Arizona Artbeat: New Tempe Arts Director - The City of Tempe has hired a new arts director. Theater veteran Ralph Remington will discuss his new role as the citys art director. Arizona Artbeat: SMoCA Behind the Scenes - Get a glimpse at the newest exhibition at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art called Public Trust. It’s a behind the scenes look at how museum employees put together exhibits, catalog inventory, and preserve existing works. Museumgoers can ask questions of employees and get a better understanding of how the museum operates. We also get to see the lengths a conservator goes to as she tries to repair a broken sculpture. Phoenix Girls Chorus - The Phoenix Girls Chorus is starting their 35th season. They are coming off a whirlwind tour this summer where they were invited to sing at Carnegie Hall. The chorus is composed of five choirs for girls aged 7 - 18 and the mission is to cultivate, inspire, and empower young women to find their voice through world-class music education and performance. Artistic Director Danya Tiller and a member of the chorus will join us on set. Arizona Artbeat: Scottsdale Cultural Council Name Change - The Scottsdale Cultural Council is changing its name to Scottsdale Arts to more clearly define its role in bringing arts to Scottsdale through its three divisions: the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) and Scottsdale Public Art. Neale Perl, the president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts, will tell more about what’s behind the name change and rebranding effort.

  • Arizona ArtBeat: Southwest Vocal Competition  |   Video
    • The first-ever Southwest Vocal Competition is being held at the Mayo Clinic’s Shea Campus in Scottsdale. It’s an effort to find singers with the best voices, who will be awarded a chance to perform with the Phoenix Opera Orchestra at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix February 8. Besides the competition aspect, it’s also an education effort on the part of Mayo Clinic’s Voice Department to talk about voice health. Gail Massaro, the co-founder and creative director of the Phoenix Opera, will talk about the competition, along with Dr. David Lott from the Mayo Voice Department.

The institute now has a new dean, Steven Tepper, a social scientist and policy scholar who is one of the nation’s top authorities on creativity and cultural participation. He will talk about his new role and his vision for the institute.
