  Yarnell Hill Fire Report

A report was released by the Arizona State Forestry Division on the Yarnell Hill Fire, which killed 19 firefighters. Wildfire expert Jim Paxon, currently of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, will discuss the report.

  Water Management Research for Cotton Farmers

Researchers at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona are working on a study to understand farmers’ perspectives on water management and how water policies affect their operations. ASU Associate Professor Hallie Eakin, who is working on the research, will talk about the study.

  Copper Mine Response

A conservationist who represents a coalition of conservation groups will counter statements made by U.S. representatives about a land swap needed for a copper mine near Superior. Roger Featherstone of the Arizona Mining Reform Coalition will respond to comments made about the land swap.

  Yarnell Hill Fire Aftermath

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has declined to declare the Yarnell Hill Fire area a disaster area. Also, the family of one of the firefighter’s killed in the blaze is fighting to get death benefits. House Speaker Andy Tobin will address those issue

  Yarnell Hill Fire Site

The Yarnell Hill Fire Site, where 19 Hotshot firefighters lost their lives, was opened to the media for the first time this week. KTAR fire reporter Jim Cross visited the site and will talk about his experience and show pictures he took there.

  Yarnell Fire Tragedy

It’s the worst firefighter tragedy in Arizona history and the third worst in the U.S. history. A fire near Yarnell has claimed the lives of 19 firefighters and has destroyed half of the 500 structures in Yarnell. Jim Paxon, who became the face and voice of the Rodeo-Chediski Fire that ravaged Arizona forests in 2002, will talk about the tragedy and firefighting policy.

  Resolution Copper Mine

We heard earlier in the week from Residents of Superior who oppose a land swap to allow the Resolution Copper mine to be built near the town. Mila Besich-Lira, a long-time Superior resident, will talk about her support for the land swap.

  City of Superior vs Resolution Copper Mine

The town of Superior is against a land swap that would allow the construction of the Resolution Copper Mine near Superior. Former Mayor Roy Chavez and Superior Council Member Soyla “Kiki” Peralta testified about Superior’s opposition to the land swap before congress and will talk about that on Arizona Horizon.

  Bisbee Civil Unions Ordinance

The Bisbee City Council has approved an ordinance allowing same-sex civil unions in the southeastern Arizona city. Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne says that is unconstitutional, and has threatened to take the issue to court. Horne and attorney Tim Nelson will discuss the legality of the ordinance.

  Citrus Bug

There’s been a dramatic increase in western Arizona of a bug that can do tremendous damage to citrus trees. The Asian Citrus Psyllid carries greening disease, otherwise known as Huanglongbing. Once a tree is infected it will die. The disease could damage our state’s Citrus crop, one of the Five Cs that adds $37 million dollars a year to Arizona’s economy. John Caravett, a of the Arizona Department of Agriculture, will tell us more.
