The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a “drought designation” for 11 Arizona counties. Eligible farmers in the drought designated counties can apply for low-interest loans. Jack Peterson, interim director for the Arizona Department of Agriculture, will discuss the issue.

  Around Arizona: USDA Rural Development Funding

At the end of the last federal fiscal year, USDA Rural Development in Arizona reported a record $474 million in investment in housing funding for Arizona. That brought the five-year total to over $2 billion. Besides the housing funding, money was spent on tribes, towns, school districts, community centers, food banks, colleges, hospitals and small businesses. USDA Rural Development in Arizona State Director Alan Stephens will discuss how the funding has impacted the state.

The Arizona Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is releasing its report on the Yarnell Hill Fire, which killed 19 firefighters. Jim Cross, who covers wildfires for KTAR radio, will discuss the report.

  I-11 Freeway Hearings

The Arizona and Nevada departments of transportation hosted five public meetings this month to present a range of alternatives for the Interstate 11 freeway, proposed to link Phoenix and Las Vegas. Mike Kies, the Arizona lead for the I-11 study, will discuss the meetings and the freeway.

  Arizona Wine Learning Center

A wine education center has been set up at Yavapai College. The Southwest Wine Center, on the Verde Valley campus in Clarkdale, is a premier academic center supporting wine growers throughout the Southwest. Maynard Keenan, a musician for the rock band “Tool” and Jerome Mayor Nikki Check have been instrumental in building the center and will appear on Arizona Horizon to tell us more.

  Yarnell Hill Fire Report

A report was released by the Arizona State Forestry Division on the Yarnell Hill Fire, which killed 19 firefighters. Wildfire expert Jim Paxon, currently of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, will discuss the report.

  Water Management Research for Cotton Farmers

Researchers at Arizona State University and the University of Arizona are working on a study to understand farmers’ perspectives on water management and how water policies affect their operations. ASU Associate Professor Hallie Eakin, who is working on the research, will talk about the study.

  Copper Mine Response

A conservationist who represents a coalition of conservation groups will counter statements made by U.S. representatives about a land swap needed for a copper mine near Superior. Roger Featherstone of the Arizona Mining Reform Coalition will respond to comments made about the land swap.
